- Scientific Name
- Heterodera glycines
- Background
- Soybeans in Edgecombe county were being scouted and 10% of the field was observed to be affected by disease in a random pattern, possibly by a green stem issue.
- Conclusion
- This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatments products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always results in a yield response.
