Bean leaf beetles

scouted July 22, 2022

Scientific Name
Cerotoma trifurcata
Background
Soybeans in Sampson county, variety AG52XFO, were scouted and sampled for a routine check of disease pressure.
Conclusion
This issue was caused by Cerotoma trifurcata. Its feed patterns appear as round holes eaten through the leaves. Larvae is can also feed on developing root nodules. Treatment is warranted if defoliation is greater than 30%. Two treatments might be needed. Younger vegetative seedlings are more susceptible to adult feed and more tolerant as they grow. Bean leaf beetle is a common insect of soybean seedlings in the Tidewater region, it seldom requires treatment at this locale or anywhere in North Carolina.
