- Background
- A tobacco field in Davidson County was being scouted, and it was observed that it was affected by browning and yellowing between the veins in random areas of the field, but it was widespread throughout it. The site is in a high and sunny area. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV). Tobacco mosaic virus causes plants to have mosaic leaf patterns, distortion, and stunted growth. These symptoms often become more noticeable as plants mature but may be mistaken for nutrient or environmental issues. TMV is very durable and can survive steaming, and there is no chemical control available for it. In the greenhouse, this means that infected plants and the trays that held them need to be disposed of.
