Soybean Phytophthora root and stem rot

Background
Soybeans in Carteret county, variety 03, were scouted and observed 50% of the field was affected by Charcoal rot like symptoms.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Phytophthora root and stem rot. Phytophthora root and stem rot of soybean is caused by oomycetes (water molds). Cultural practices that improve soil drainage is important to limit the spread. Because infections often take place early in the growing season, use of a seed treatment or soil-applied fungicide may be beneficial to reducing infections.
