Field corn was being scouted in Wake county and it was observed that 25% of the field was affected by leaf spot, which was planted around July 30th. Its third year of corn with clover as cover crop. Though owner says there was no spray but looked like chemical burn along with Holcus or other leaf spot. Owner spot applied 33-0-0 for growth and a sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
The cause for the spots was diagnosed as Curvularia leaf spot. Curvularia leaf spot is caused by a fungus. It's lesions tend to occur on corn leaves following rain during reproductive maturity. In the U.S., it's considered mostly an aesthetic issue than a yield limiting disease.
