Pythium root rot

scouted Aug. 5, 2021

Scientific Name
Pythium sp.
Background
Soybeans in Johnston county were scouted and observed 10% of the field was affected by damping off in random parts of the field. The roots and stems are rotted. Seeds did not have a fungicide seed treatment.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
