Bark lice

Ectopsocopsis cryptomeriae
Background
Soybeans in Perquimans county were scouted and observed a widespread insect issue in grain bins and tanks at a local grain elevator. The insects are small, similar size to a gnat or fly.
Conclusion
This issue was identified as Bark lice, Ectopsocopsis cryptomeriae. These bugs are incidental insects in crops. They do not feed on live plant tissue. They are not a documented soybean pest in North Carolina and do not cause economic injury.
