scouted Aug. 5, 2021

Scientific Name
Spissistilus festinus
Background
Soybeans in Johnston county were scouted and observed 5% of the field was affected by canker and yellowing between the veins in random areas. Interveinal chlorosis is present on various leaves. Mold was found at the ground level on the stem. The internal tissue in the the stem looked healthy.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as the three-cornered alfalfa hopper. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
