Insect damage

scouted Nov. 21, 2024

Scientific Name
Class Insecta
Background
Soybeans in Pitt County, variety 675, full season, were being scouted, and it was observed that 5% of the field was affected by blight, defoliation, as well as marginal browning and yellowing of the leaves. The plants also showed signs of insect chewing and signs of chlorosis and curling. The field borders with peanunt fields. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
Conclusion
This issue was caused by corn earworm or bean leaf beetles. Insects occasionally cause seedling defoliation. Insect damage appears as holes eaten through the leaf. Bean leaf beetles seldom require treatment in North Carolina.
