Soybeans in Durham county were scouted in a greenhouse and observed browning and wilting. The leaves and stems are affected. Two plants, of a 114 plant set are showing extreme wilt and browning on the stems at the soil line.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as Pythium root rot and/or Pythium crown rot. This disease is caused by Pythium sp. Pythium root rot and crown rot can result in both pre- and post-emergence damping-off, leading to delayed emergence and stunting of infected seedlings. Prevalence tends to increase in warm and moist, but not saturated soils. This pathogen is an oomycete.
