- A corn field in Pitt County was being scouted, and it was observed that 95% of the field was affected by blight, yellowing, leaf spot, smut, small ears, and stunting. Symptoms were widespread. The field is flat and has experienced drought. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The cause for the spots was diagnosed as Curvularia leaf spot. Curvularia leaf spot is caused by a fungus. Its lesions tend to occur on corn leaves following rain during reproductive maturity. In the U.S., it's considered mostly an aesthetic issue rather than a yield-limiting disease.
