- Scientific Name
- Abiotic
- Background
- Soybeans in Durham county, variety 06KG, were scouted and observed 30% of the field was affected by browning, leaf spot, decay, in random areas of the field and is widespread.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as high soluble salt. Storm surges, hurricanes, high tide, and are factors that result in saltwater intrusion into soil profiles. High levels of sodium and chloride can be toxic to plants, decreasing yield, land degradation, and crop mortality. Rainfall before a saltwater influx reduces sodium infiltration and rainfall after a storm dilutes and flushes out salt from soil. To avoid damage from soluble salts soil testing is recommended.
