Soybeans in Person county were scouted and sampled four weeks after no treatment. The sample was taken for routine check of disease pressure in the research field. Some leaf spots were seen on the tissue.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as the three-cornered alfalfa hopper. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
