- Scientific Name
- Spissistilus festinus
- Background
- A soybean field in Beaufort County was being scouted, and it was observed that 1% of the field was affected by yellowing in random areas of the field, red staining at the base of the stem, and red fruiting structures on roots. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- There were alflafa hoppers identified in the sample. Both adults and nymphs feed on the soybean plant by piercing the main stem, branches, and leaf petioles. Weakening and breaking of soybean stems as well as lodging are symptoms associated with damage from three-cornered alfalfa hoppers. Recommended treatment to control this pest can include using a pyrethroid insecticide, along with continued scouting.
