A soybean field in Edgecombe had a widespread distribution of potato leaf hoppers.
Conclusion
The issue was identified as potato leaf hopper, Empoasaca fabae. Both adults and nymphs feed on leaf tissue on new shoots and can cause stuntint, curling and browning. Potato leaf hoppers are a sporadic pest in soybeans which means treatment threshold may vary. Most treatment decisions are based on plant growth stage.
