Anthracnose

scouted Aug. 11, 2022

Scientific Name
Colletotrichum destructivum
Background
Soybeans in Stokes county, variety MS5398RXT, were scouted and observed 20% of the field was affected by browning and yellowing both marginal and between the veins, ring spot, shot hole, and frogeye in patches in the field. The soybean had curling leaves. Some bean leaf rollers present, stink bugs, kudzu bugs, grasshoppers present. One to three stink bugs per plant and two to four kudzu bugs per plant. Some frogeye present throughout field, yellowing seems to be worse in compacted area. Yellowing is more pronounced on newer, upper leaves in bad areas and seen on older, lower leaves in good areas. Some chewing, feeding present on leaves, grasshopper pressure quite heavy throughout field.
Conclusion
The cause of disease was identified as Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum. While usually a disease that shows in the stems and the petioles, it can also cause leaf curling and reddening of the veins. Warm, wet weather favors infection and disease development. Crop rotation and tillage can reduce inoculum, while foliar fungicides will reduce disease, but it's usually not profitable.
