Soybean cyst nematodes

scouted July 7, 2023

Scientific Name
Heterodera glycines
Background
Soybeans in Beaufort county, variety AG 43FX2, were scouted and it was observed that 15% of field was affected by damping off and stunting in patches and strips across the field. The site is a low area. Some of the plants randomly dead throughout the area. Plants on either side of dead plants are fine.
Conclusion
This issue was identified as soybean cyst nematode, caused by Heterodera glycines. The nematode damages the soybean roots by penetrating, feeding and reproducing on the root tissue. Nematicide fumigant, in-furrow, seed treatments products are available, though effectiveness is variable, especially under elevated SCN pressure. These chemical controls for SCN and other nematodes are often expensive and may not always results in a yield response.
