- Background
- A corn field, variety Illusion and Silver King, was being scouted, and it was observed that 45% of the field was affected by leaves turning purple/red in patches. The field has both high and low spots, poorly drained spots, and sandhills, and both are affected. It has been abnormally dry and cold, but the grower irrigates with a reel. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as low pH damage. Low pH levels can damage corn by decreasing nutrient availability and increasing the solubility of toxic metals like aluminum. Soil pH below 5.5 can cause deficiencies in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, magnesium, and calcium. Applying lime to increase soil pH is recommended when average levels are below 5.5.
