- Background
- A tobacco field, variety RJ107 was being scouted, and it was observed that 40% of the field was affected by yellowing between the veins, mottled leaf spots and bronzing of leaves. The issue is widespread. A sample was submitted to the PDIC for diagnosis.
- Conclusion
- The issue was identified as Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV). Tobacco mosaic virus causes plants to have mosaic leaf patterns, distortion, and stunted growth. These symptoms often become more noticeable as plants mature, but may be mistaken for nutrient or environmental issues. TMV is very durable and can survive steaming, and there is no chemical control available for it. In the greenhouse, this means that infected plants and the trays that held them need to be disposed of.
