Corn at R4/R5 stage was scouted specifically looking for ear rots. Corn kernels with a starburst white pattern were observed.
Conclusion
The cause for this was identified as Fusarium ear rot. This was identified by the starburst symptom that is caused by the fungus growing under the kernel pericarp. Fusarium ear rot is associated with fumonisisns which can cause fumonisin poisoning. Swine and equine are the most sensitive to fumonisins.
